Concept B: BRANCH LIBRARY WITH EXPANDED SERVICES
Fully accessible library with new space to provide 21st century library services. Maintain existing library collection. 30% increase in usable space (approx. 2,000 sqft), increased staff, intermediate cost.
Option B envisions an expanded library with resources to provide 21st century library services including a new community room, expanded arts & crafts programming for children, maker spaces for young adults, computer bar for startup professionals, and learning opportunities for all.
Concept B1: ‘Branch Library with Rear Porch’
Landscape Features:
- Improved accessible entry sequence
- More formal landscape and entry sequence. Provides permanent seating and opportunities for flexible seating & programming
- Intimate reading court or programmable lawn in rear garden.
Building Features:
- Maintains the size of the existing library collection.
- New flexible community room / reading room rear ‘porch’
- Opportunity for more quiet and controlled reading spaces
- Better proportioned and larger community room
- Main level can function as traditional library (quiet reading areas, browsable collection, etc.). Lower level functions as a more interactive space (maker space, meeting rooms,
etc).
Challenges:
- Rear lawn landscape opportunities have been substantially reduced. Smaller programmable lawn or reading court in rear.
- Multipurpose reading / community room involves logistical challenges to set-up and schedule
- Larger project to fund and maintain than Concept A and requires additional staff
- Difficult parking with 2 parallel spaces
